A Casual Meditation for Anywhere and Anytime

The choreographic score or task A Casual Meditation for Anywhere and Anytime is a response to Gabriella Gianacchi’s essay Into the Space of the Digital Museum. They are both included in the book Moving Spaces. Enacting Dance, Performance, and the Digital in the Museum (Edizioni Ca’ Foscari 2021). Inspired by the notion of “immersion” that Gianacchi employs in relation to large-scale digitally created works of art and museum experiences, I was interested in the ways of constructing presence through the senses and building an awareness of the surrounding environment as a result of the immersion into often disregarded physical experiences in the everyday environment. The voice instructions aim to create an intimate environment for interacting and relating with space through movement. As the gaze turns into both a “microscope” that explores space in detail and a “telescope” that opens up to the horizon, the body gradually gets in tune with the surrounding environment.

*Note: In this score, I further develop the concept of “surrounding” or “being surrounded” that I have previously elaborated in choreographic formats, such as choreographic environments and events, by building on the performative interactions that may occur between body and space. Other unpublished choreographic scores include: Choreographic Scores for a Mover, a Camera and an Observer; Tracing, Transforming, Sharing.
